Cleaning ceramic hob: top secrets to make it last 10 years longer

A glass-ceramic hob has many advantages: it's easy to use, conducts heat well and helps save energy - plus it gives our kitchens an elegant, sophisticated look. But what do you do when it gets dirty?

Food scraps and burnt-on grease splashes are difficult to remove, especially considering that the surface is fragile. But with the right ingredients, you can restore your hob to its original shine.

How do you clean a glass ceramic hob?

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda).

Sodium bicarbonate proves to be incredibly useful for household cleaning (and not only). To remove food stains on the hob, mix a few tablespoons of baking soda with a little lukewarm water until a thick paste forms.

Spread the paste over the cooktop, especially on the most noticeable stains. Let the baking soda soak in for about an hour and then remove it with a soft, damp cloth. The stains will disappear effortlessly.

Lemon juice

Lemon juice is also often used as an ally for house cleaning: namely, the citric acid contained in lemons has disinfecting and degreasing properties and also helps remove unpleasant odors from surfaces.

Take half a lemon (you may juice it before hand) and rub the hob with it, paying extra attention to stains. After treatment, let the juice soak in for a few minutes and then remove with a damp cloth.

Dishwasher tablets

Did you know that ordinary dishwasher tablets, which clean our dishes, can also be used to clean the glass ceramic hob? You can keep several your kitchen clean with a single cleaning product.

As with baking soda, make a 'cleaning paste' from the dishwasher tablet: put the tablet in a bowl or cup, crush it into crumbs with a fork and mix the powder with a little water.

Take the resulting paste and spread it on the hob, then let it soak in for about ten minutes. After that, use a soft sponge to remove the product.

White vinegar

White vinegar is another valuable ally for cleaning the glass ceramic hob. Thanks to its natural acidity, this ingredient is particularly effective in removing haze and scale that can form on the surface. For best results, pour pure vinegar directly onto a soft cloth and rub it over the cooktop in circular motions.

For more stubborn stains, you can also make a solution by mixing vinegar and water in equal parts in a spray bottle, misting the liquid onto the dirty surface and letting it act for about five minutes. After that, you just have to go over it with a damp cloth to remove all residue.

Vinegar not only cleans but also makes the surface shiny, restoring the glass's shine. Moreover, it's an entirely natural and safe product, with no adverse effects on health or the environment.

What you should never do

When caring for our glass ceramic hob, it's essential to know not only what to do, but also what to avoid. First of all, you should ban scouring sponges, metal scouring pads and any type of rough sponge from your cleaning routine: these tools may be effective on other surfaces, but on the fragile glass of the hob, they can cause irreparable scratches - permanent streaks that are not only ugly, but can also impair the appliance's performance.

Just as important is avoiding overly aggressive chemicals, such as bleach or industrial degreasers, which can damage the protective layer of the surface. Another common mistake is cleaning while the cooktop is still hot: aside from the risk of burning, the heat can cause the cleaning agents to evaporate too quickly, leaving streaks and making cleaning less effective.

Finally, make sure you never slide pots and pans across the surface: always lift them when you move them, as even a simple sliding motion can cause scratches - especially if there are burnt-on residues or abrasive particles at the bottom of the pan.

How to tackle stubborn stains

Some stains require extra attention because they behave differently than ordinary dirt. For example, burned sugar is one of the most critical cases: when sugar melts and caramelizes on the hot surface, a rock-hard crust forms that can damage the glass if you don't remove it properly.

In this particular case, you need to intervene immediately while the hob is still hot, using a special glass-ceramic scraper, which you must use at an angle of about thirty degrees to gently pry off the caramelized sugar. This is because once the sugar has cooled down, it becomes much more difficult to remove and you risk permanent damage.

Melted plastic is another common problem: if you accidentally put a plastic container on the hot hob, it can melt and stick to the surface. Again, we need to act while the spot is still lukewarm, using the scraper with gentle motions.

For aluminum streaks caused by pans, we can opt for a slightly more concentrated baking soda paste, letting it soak in longer than usual, or use pure white vinegar and rub it in a bit more vigorously - but always with a soft cloth.

The glass ceramic scraper

Among the indispensable tools for maintaining the glass ceramic hob, the special scraper deserves special mention. This is a tool specifically designed with a sharp but safe metal blade attached to an ergonomic handle that allows you to precisely control the angle and pressure during use.

Unlike other, generic scrapers, the glass ceramic variant has a blade that is designed so that it does not scratch the glass when used correctly, that is, at an angle of about thirty degrees to the surface. This tool is especially valuable for removing burnt-on food residues, stubborn caked-on stains and any stains that do not dissolve with ordinary cleaning agents. Its use is simple: let the cooktop cool down, then place the blade at the beginning of the stain and slide the scraper forward under the dirt with moderate but constant pressure.

It's important to replace blades regularly, as soon as they become blunt or damaged, as a blade in poor condition can scratch the surface instead of cleaning it. Many glass ceramic scrapers are sold with spare blades in the package, making this tool even more practical and durable to use.

Difference between glass ceramic and induction

There is often confusion between glass ceramic hobs and induction hobs, and that distinction is important - not only for cleaning, but also in everyday use. Glass ceramic hobs work with electrical resistors under the glass surface that heat up by conduction and transfer heat through the glass to the pan. That means the surface gets hot during use and stays hot for some time after you turn it off.

Induction hobs, on the other hand, although very similar with their black glass surface, have a different operating principle: they create a magnetic field that heats the bottom of the pan directly, without the glass itself heating up significantly.

This difference has important practical implications: on a glass ceramic hob we can use any kind of pan, while induction requires pans with a ferromagnetic bottom. In terms of cleaning, induction hobs tend to get less dirty because the surface remains cooler and food is less likely to burn; glass ceramic hobs, on the other hand, require a bit more attention, as the high temperatures can create stubborn caking. However, both types should always be cleaned carefully, with non-abrasive products, to maintain the integrity of the surface.

How often should you clean the hob?

A regular cleaning routine is essential to keeping your glass ceramic hob efficient and well maintained. Daily cleaning should become an automatic habit after each use: once the hob has cooled down, quickly go over it with a damp cloth to remove splatters, drips and cooking residue. This action, which literally takes a minute, prevents dirt from caking and makes subsequent cleanings much easier. At this stage you don't need to use any cleaning products; lukewarm water will do.

Once a week, you can take a little more time for a more thorough cleaning: use one of the natural methods described in this article, such as baking soda or vinegar, to treat the entire surface and remove any haze or stains left behind after daily cleaning.

If you cook very often or prepare dishes that splash and spill a lot, you may need to do this thorough cleaning twice a week.

On the other hand, if you use the hob only occasionally, a thorough cleaning every ten days should suffice. In any case, it's important not to allow dirt to accumulate for too long, because the longer you wait, the harder it becomes to remove - and then you need more aggressive products or more scrubbing.

How do you care for a glass ceramic hob?

A glass-ceramic hob in your kitchen will save you quite a bit on your energy consumption, but it's an appliance that requires constant care and attention to function properly and last a long time. Some maintenance tips:

- Clean the hob with a damp cloth before AND after each use - even if it doesn't seem very dirty: with this slight effort, you'll remove dirt before it has a chance to burn in.

- Always let the hob cool down before cleaning it.

- Use lukewarm water and a soft cloth for cleaning and avoid abrasive sponges that can damage the surface.
