In Collinsville, Colorado, 43-year-old Sara Gilson was shot and killed by her husband. This happened two weeks after she posted a video about him on TikTok in which she accused him of pedophilia. The man, Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey, subsequently committed suicide, according to U.S. media and police reports.
Gilson was part of a viral TikTok trend in which users pretend they’re sitting down for a revealing interview in a Netflix documentary. Her video, however, took a grim turn. “I’m preparing for the moment when Netflix releases a documentary about my soon-to-be ex-husband, whom I just discovered is a pedophile,” she wrote in the video’s caption. According to NBC News, she also added: “I wish I was joking.”
Restraining order
The woman had already sounded the alarm earlier. In June, she applied for a restraining order and was granted one, requiring Duffey to stay away. According to U.S. media, the emergency court documents stated that he had previously threatened her. Nevertheless, he reportedly broke into her home last week while her minor son was there. There, Duffey shot and killed Gilson, after which he took his own life. The son called the police, who arrived quickly on the scene and launched an investigation.
Abuse of a 15-year-old girl
Notably, the judge also issued another restraining order against Duffey that same day. It concerned a 15-year-old girl from the basketball team he coached. According to her mother, he had kissed the girl and touched her inappropriately; a fellow coach reportedly caught him in the act, the local newspaper The Oklahoman reported.
