Wolf attack: “Without our dog, my little boy wouldn’t be here anymore”

A summer evening in Orbicciano, Tuscany, ended in tragedy. While the family was preparing for a barbecue, a wolf reportedly entered their unfenced yard and targeted a two-year-old toddler who was playing.

According to Italian media, the family dog, Destiny—a seven-year-old mixed-breed weighing about 22 kilos—immediately jumped between the animal and the child. The dog protected the boy but was grabbed by the throat and dragged into the nearby woods. The mother tried to intervene and sustained minor injuries. The child was unharmed.

A pack of wolves at work?

The family and a few neighbors followed the animal, but later found only Destiny’s lifeless remains in the woods. For her owners, the dog had been part of the family for years, and they believe she may have saved their child’s life. The incident immediately received widespread attention in the Italian press.

The Associazione Nazionale per la Tutela dell’Ambiente e della Vita Rurali calls it an extremely serious incident and suspects that multiple wolves may have been involved. That assessment is still a hypothesis at this point, but it does fuel concerns about wolves appearing more and more frequently near residential areas. The Italian nature conservation organization points out that the attack took place in an area where wolves had previously been reported.

The incident is part of a broader Italian debate on how to deal with wolves, in which nature conservation and public safety are increasingly at odds. For the family in Camaiore, what remains most of all is the loss of Destiny: a dog who, according to her owners, gave her life to save that of their child.
