Japan is gearing up for a new season of sakura, the long-awaited season of cherry blossoms that transforms cities, parks and landscapes into soft, luminous scenes every spring. In 2026, as it does every year, this phenomenon promises to draw millions of travelers from all over the world to the Land of the Rising Sun. Those already in the process of planning a trip can get their bearings on the best time periods, cities and key spots to experience this natural and cultural spectacle to the maximum.

What is the best period for flowering?

Planning a trip to Japan requires attention to timing, especially if your main goal is enjoying the beautiful hanami. The dates shift each year depending on weather conditions, so many travelers follow Japan's weather reports closely.

For 2026, experts point to the most reliable period from March 25 to April 10, a time period when most major cities should normally be in full bloom. During these weeks, avenues and parks are already shrouded in pink.

What hanami really is

Hanami is a deeply rooted tradition in Japanese culture. Literally it means 'looking at the flowers', and it refers to the custom of gathering in parks, gardens or along rivers to admire the flowering cherry trees. Families, friends and colleagues often organize picnics under the trees, where they eat, drink and share pleasant moments.

The symbolic value is central: the sakura, resplendent but at their most beautiful only for a few days, embody impermanent beauty, the passage of time and the fragility of existence. Therefore, hanami unites joy and melancholy in a very particular emotional balance.

In recent years, this sensibility has taken hold outside of Japan. In some parts of Europe and the world, of course, you can also admire cherry blossoms, although they lack the original ritual context.

How the blossom moves across cities

The blossoms gradually migrate from south to north, and can be summarized roughly as follows:

- Kyushu (Fukuoka and Kagoshima) ushers in the season as early as mid-March.

- Tokyo, Nagoya and Kyoto reach their peak between late March and early April.

- Sendai and Hokkaido (Sapporo) are later, often in the second half of April.

- Hirosaki, in the north, stands out for its spectacular blooms between late April and early May.

How long the sakura spectacle lasts

The full bloom remains at its best for about 5-7 days, although this period may be shorter if it rains or when there are strong winds. The whole process has three key moments:

- Kaika (opening): the buds begin to open, creating anticipation and excitement.

- Mankai (full bloom): almost all the flowers are open and the parks look like pink clouds.

- Sakura fubuki (blossom rain): the wind blows petals through the air, creating particularly poetic, atmospheric scenes.

In stable weather, the final phase may continue for a few days.

Where to experience hanami in 2026

These are the main places to experience the phenomenon in all its splendor:

Tokyo (March 27-April 5)

- Ueno Park is the most famous location in the city.

- Chidorigafuchi offers boat rides among the cherry trees along the moat surrounding the Imperial Palace.

- The Meguro River is known for evening lantern-lit walks along the flowering trees.

Kyoto (March 29-April 8)

- Maruyama Park and the temples of Higashiyama provide a particularly elegant setting for the blossoms.

Hirosaki (late April - early May)

- Hirosaki Park in Aomori is one of Japan's most spectacular locations. The cherry trees surround a historic castle and reflect in the canals, creating iconic images.

Osaka

- Osaka Castle, surrounded by more than 3,000 cherry trees, offers unforgettable views. The walk along the Okawa River treats you to miles of continuous blooms.

Hiroshima and Miyajima

- At Peace Park, the blossoms provide a powerful contrast to the historical memory of the site. On Miyajima, cherry trees accompany the paths to the Itsukushima Shrine and frame the famous red torii.

Kanazawa

- The Kenrokuen garden, one of the most beautiful in the country, combines sakura with bridges, ponds and sophisticated sightlines. The nearby castle adds another decorative dimension, especially at sunset.
