Why is it strongly discouraged to leave the keys in the lock?

Many people have the habit of leaving the key in the lock once the door is locked, and believe that this can make burglary attempts more difficult. In reality, this belief is entirely false.

An experienced burglar, or even a simple malicious person, can easily manipulate the key from the outside using a strong magnet or a special tool so that they can turn it without any effort. In other words, leaving the key in the lock does not provide any additional protection, quite the contrary.

The real problem is not only the risk of theft. In emergencies, this habit may even prove dangerous. If a family member, neighbor or confidant has a spare key and needs to get inside quickly - in the event of a sudden fire, for example - he or she cannot open the door because the key on the inside prevents another key from being inserted from the outside. In situations where every second counts, such negligence can make all the difference.

Risk of locking yourself out and unexpected costs

In addition to security concerns, leaving the key in the lock can lead to a very common inconvenience: locking yourself out.

If the door accidentally slams shut while you're outside - a common situation, especially in apartments with doors that lock automatically - even a spare key won't save you, because the lock is unusable from the outside. If this happens, you have no choice but to call a locksmith, often at high rates, especially at night or on holidays.

Those who have adolescent children know the problem all too well: how often do youngsters come home late and find the door locked? If the lock doesn't allow you to turn the key from the outside, you are forced to get up to let them in. This can be an annoying situation that you can easily avoid by taking few precautions.

The best alternatives for increased security

To avoid these risks, it's best to never leave the key in the lock, either at night or during the day. Here are some effective solutions to secure your home without fuss:

- Never leave keys close to the door (on a cabinet, a coat rack or above the fireplace). Burglars know exactly where to look and can even take the car keys and drive off with it without you noticing.

- Install a europrofile lock with double cylinder or with a double operation. This type of lock allows you to open the door from the outside even if there's a key inside, so that you avoid locking yourself out.

- Consider installing a magnetic defender, which provides additional security and prevents burglars from forcing the lock.

Modern technology solutions for a more secure home

In recent years, technology has made tremendous progress in home security, offering innovative alternatives to traditional mechanical locks.

- Smart/electronic locks: these devices are the future of home security. They allow you to open the door via a smartphone (including remotely), a personal PIN code, a fingerprint or even facial recognition. The big advantage is that the problem of physical keys disappears entirely: you can no longer lock yourself out or accidentally leave the key in the lock. Moreover, many models record every access action, so you always know who entered and at what time. You can also create temporary codes for guests, babysitters or cleaners, which automatically expire after use.

- Intelligent video door entry systems: these devices allow you to see and speak to anyone who rings the doorbell, even when you're at the office or on vacation. Thanks to the wifi connection and the dedicated app, you receive real-time notifications on your smartphone as soon as someone approaches the door. Some models are equipped with motion detection and video recording, so you have an archive of all visitors. A particularly useful feature to prevent scams among the elderly or to keep an eye on deliveries.

- Connected alarm systems: modern security systems integrate perfectly with smart locks and video door entry systems to form a complete security ecosystem. You receive instant notifications in case of burglary attempts, suspicious openings or unusual movements. Many systems also allow you to trigger the alarm remotely, simulate presence in your home by automatically turning on lights, or alert emergency services directly in case of an emergency.

These technologies, once seen as a luxury, are increasingly affordable and are a wise investment for anyone looking to protect their home in a modern and effective way.

By taking these simple measures, you will avoid nasty surprises and ensure better protection for yourself and your family.
