Ten years after the release of the acclaimed animated film, Disney brings Vaiana to the big screen in a live-action version, ready to rewrite the legend of Vaiana and the demigod Maui with spectacular visual effects and breathtaking sets.

The young Catherine Lagaʻaia plays Vaiana, while Dwayne Johnson brings Maui to life, ensuring continuity with the iconic soul of the original film, in which he already lent his voice to Maui.

The plot: Vaiana beyond the barrier reef

To be released in cinemas in summer 2026, the film follows Vaiana as she answers the call of the Ocean and embarks on a journey that takes her beyond the coral reef of her island, Motunui. At her side is Maui, her adventurous companion and charismatic demigod. The tale blends Polynesian mythology, courage and family ties, transforming the story into an epic adventure capable of conquering young and old alike.

Meticulous, spectacular production

Behind the camera is Emmy and Tony Award-winner Thomas Kail, while the project is produced by Mr. Johnson himself alongside Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The soundtrack, entrusted to Mark Mancina and Lin-Manuel Miranda, as well as original tracks byOpetaia Foaʻi, help create a spellbinding musical rhythm that accompanies the film's visual magic.

Cultural fidelity to Polynesian roots

The official trailer reveals a strikingly realistic Polynesian universe: vibrant oceans, mythological creatures and spectacular settings recreate the atmosphere of the original film with a more realistic approach. The production worked closely with experts to ensure cultural fidelity and do justice to the story's Polynesian roots. The challenge will be to transform this animated classic into a major cinematic experience, combining myth, adventure and technology, in a film capable of moving both those who loved the original and new generations of viewers.
