A former British local government official has admitted in court to committing extremely serious crimes against his own wife for over more than a decade.

Philip Young, 49, a former Enfield Council member with responsible for cultural matters, confessed at Winchester Crown Court to repeatedly drugging and sexually assaulting his wife, as well as allowing other men to abuse her. The abuse allegedly took place between 2010 and 2024.

The man admitted responsibility for around 50 charges, including: 11 sexual assaults and 11 episodes of administering drugs, 14 counts of voyeurism involving around 200 episodes and 7 assaults, 4 sexual assaults and the distribution of illicit material on at least 500 occasions.

However, Young contested to certain charges relating to the possession of child pornography.

The victim, Joanne (48), discovered the abuse and lodged a complaint in 2024, which led to the arrest of her ex-husband. Young had stepped down from political office in May 2010, saying that he wanted to devote more time to his family - a statement that now takes on a tragically ironic meaning.

Five other men are involved in the trial and accused of participating in the abuse. All deny the charges. The proceedings will resume next October.

It's a story of extreme brutality, closely reminiscent of the French case of Gisèle Pelicot, who suffered sexual violence and chemical subjection for a decade, at the hands of her husband and numerous other men. The legal proceedings resulted in several convictions, including a 20-year prison sentence for Dominique Pelicot himself.
