A dark day for the German mountaineering community.
Two German mountaineers died Saturday in separate accidents in the Austrian Alps. According to police, the men fell in different locations in the mountains in Vorarlberg and Tyrol and did not survive their falls.
In Vorarlberg, the victim was a German tourist who was hiking a via ferrata. When he unclipped his safety gear, he lost his balance and fell approximately 100 meters. The man had previously mentioned that he was tired and had underestimated the difficulty of the route, according to the police. The second accident occurred in Tyrol, on the Wildspitze in the Ötztal Alps. There, a 63-year-old German man fell approximately 200 meters during the descent. The man sustained fatal injuries and died shortly thereafter.
The Wildspitze is one of Austria’s highest mountains and a well-known but demanding destination for mountaineers. According to the police, the second man was part of a group undertaking the mountain hike. The exact cause of both accidents is not yet known, but in both cases, the victims were climbing at high altitude and in difficult terrain. Losing focus for a fraction of a second or simply slipping can, unfortunately, be fatal in the high mountains.
Rescue services were able to recover the bodies of both men using a police helicopter. Authorities have long warned that mountaineering in the Alps is often underestimated, especially when fatigue, steep sections, or the loosening of safety equipment are factors.
