At the end of his three-day state visit to Beijing, US President Donald Trump stated that he and Chinese President Xi-Jinping have reached an agreement on two key issues regarding Iran: the country should not acquire nuclear weapons and the Strait of Hormuz should remain open.
"We solved a lot of problems that others could not have solved," Trump declared after the visit. "We talked about Iran. We are on the same page regarding Iran. We want it to stop and we don't want them to get nuclear weapons. We want the strait to be open because it's madness. They're a little crazy and that's not good, that can't happen."
On the trade front, Trump declared that "fantastic deals" had been struck. The two countries were able to build on what was achieved last October at the summit in South Korea. China wants less stringent restrictions on U.S. technology exports, the U.S. wants more access to the Chinese market. Xi also reportedly offered to buy more U.S. oil and possibly soybeans, Trump told Fox News.
Taiwan proved to be the most contentious issue. Xi warned that U.S.-China relations depend on Washington's policy on Taiwan. The Chinese president made clear that he would not tolerate interference in Beijing's ambitions toward the island.
