Following the introduction of an entrance ticket for the Pantheon in 2023, the Trevi Fountain will now also be included in a regulated entry system. Starting on Monday, February 2, the Municipality of Rome is introducing a 2-euro entrance ticket for tourists and non-residents. Solely a ticket will allow you to enter the courtyard around the monument.
The measure, announced by the Capitol, aims to manage the flow of visitors in a more orderly manner and better protect one of the symbolic sites of the Italian capital.
Free entry for residents and exempt categories
The new fee does not apply to Rome residents. Residents of Rome still have free entry, upon presentation of a valid ID at the controls. Entry also remains free for people with disabilities and their companions, for children under 6 and for guides, who must show their valid professional pass.
After closing time, set at 10 p.m., the fountain is again open to the public for free and visible to all without restrictions.
Opening hours and conditions of regulated access
Paying a ticket applies to regulated access to the area which overlooks the monumental basin. The following time periods apply for tourists and non-residents:
- Monday and Friday: from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- All other days of the week: from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Exceptionally, on Monday, February 2, the first day when the new system is put is place, access will be possible from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Last access is always at 9 p.m.
On certain days, times may change due to maintenance work and/or exceptional events.
Record numbers of visitors after one-year test period
The decision follows a 12-month trial period, from December 2024 to December 2025, during which the municipality closely monitored visitor numbers.
During the test period, the Trevi Fountain broke the 10 million visitor mark, with an average of 30,000 visits per day and peaks of up to 70,000.
According to Rome City Council, the new system will help reduce excessive crowding, improve the quality of visits and ensure more effective conservation of the monument, financed in part by funds generated through the entrance fee.
Capitol estimates
Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri had already estimated the economic impact of the measure in late December. With the 2-euro ticket, the Capitol expects revenues of about 6.5 million euros a year, earmarked for the preservation and management of the site.
