On the night of 11 January, the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles hosted the 83rd edition of the Golden Globes, which for the first time honoured not only film and television, but the world of podcasts as well.
Presented by Nikki Glaser, the evening reflected the image of an industry in the throes of change, increasingly open to multiple languages and works capable of blending entertainment, politics and cultural identity.
The most awarded film was Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another, which won Best Comedy, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Teyana Taylor. The film traces a long spiral of political activism, betrayal and shattered identities, following a family destroyed by the conflict between extremism, repression and emotional ties. It's a work about America, radicalisation and power, and it's precisely this political ambition that explains its triumph.
Two Golden Globes went to Chloé Zhao's Hamnet - In the Name of the Son (Best Drama and Best Actress for Jessie Buckley), while Ryan Coogler's Sinners won Best Score (Ludwig Göransson) and Best Box Office Result. Other award winners included Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme), Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I'd Kick You) and Stellan Skarsgård (Sentimental Value).
Another big success was KPop Demon Hunters, winner of Best Animated Film and Best Original Song (Golden). The film recounts the double life of a K-pop girl band who fight demons using music as a weapon, mixing idol culture, fantasy and mythology.
On television, Adolescence dominated, with four Golden Globes, including those awarded to Stephen Graham, Erin Doherty and the very young sixteen-year-old actor Owen Cooper. The series, shot in sequence, recounts the tragedy of a family swept up in the arrest of a thirteen-year-old boy accused of murder.
Alongside it, The Pitt was crowned best drama series (starring Noah Wyle), while The Studio won in the comedy category, with Seth Rogen in particular. Awards also went to Rhea Seehorn (Pluribus), Jean Smart (Hacks) and Michelle Williams (Dying for Sex). Best Podcast went to Good Hang with Amy Poehler, marking a new frontier for the Globes.
