Among the twelve people who died in the wildfires in southern Spain, three are believed to be Belgian. They are missing, and there was no contact with them since last weekend.
On Sunday evening, the spokesperson for the Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs confirmed to the Belgian news agency Belga that three Belgians may have died in the wildfires in Andalusia. Last Friday, Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska had already reported that the victims were of “various nationalities.”
The victims were found in the village of Bédar, where it is known that several Belgians live. Some of the victims were found in their cars, which they had used in an attempt to escape the fire. DNA samples were collected from those cars to determine the victims’ identities.
“Official confirmation by the Spanish authorities could take a few days,” said the spokesperson for the Belgian minister. “The examinations that must be performed on the bodies to reach a definitive confirmation may take a few more days.”
