A 27-year-old man from Belgium caused quite a stir in North Brabant. With his reckless driving, he endangered the lives of many people on public roads. Fortunately, he was stopped before an accident occurred.
A 27-year-old Belgian man was caught in the Netherlands engaging in extremely dangerous driving after he was driving far too fast and under the influence of alcohol on the A16 near Rijsbergen. The Dutch police immediately revoked his driver’s license and had his car impounded.
Speeding and under the influence
Officers were monitoring roadwork on the highway in North Brabant when the vehicle caught their attention due to its high speed. A temporary speed limit of 70 kilometers per hour was in effect on that stretch of road, but the man was driving at 145 kilometers per hour—more than twice the speed limit. According to the police, the driver was clearly having trouble controlling his car. He was not taking curves properly, which led the officers to pull him over for a check. A roadside breathalyzer test indicated he had been drinking, and a breathalyzer analysis at the police station confirmed that result.
Car and driver’s license confiscated
Once the violations were confirmed, his driver’s license was immediately revoked. But that wasn’t all: his car was also impounded. The competent authority will later decide whether the vehicle will be permanently forfeited.
Serious consequences
This case is part of the Netherlands’ strict crackdown on speeding and driving under the influence, especially when the two occur together. Enforcement is typically particularly strict on stretches of road with construction work, as even minor mistakes can quickly lead to major risks there. According to the Dutch police, drivers in such cases may not only face an immediate penalty but also lose their vehicle. For this Belgian driver, the incident may therefore have further repercussions, with potential legal consequences in addition to the immediate impoundment.
