Greek police have arrested a 26-year-old foreign man on suspicion of manslaughter and robbery in connection with the death of 38-year-old British woman Elisabeth-Jane Ross, according to the British newspaper The Times. Her body was found on July 18 inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in the Kypseli neighborhood of Athens.
Investigators suspect that the suspect placed the woman’s body in the suitcase and then dumped it, and that he withdrew thousands of euros using her bank cards in the days that followed. A fake gun and a knife were found during a search of his home, leading to an additional charge of violating gun laws.
The suspect reportedly told investigators that he found Ross already dead, but that he took her bank card and disposed of the body. Her phone was still being used to send messages—including to family and a Greek friend—in which she claimed she needed “some time to herself” and that she was going to a Greek island. The phone is said to have been active in Athens until just before her official identification.
Ross, who was originally from Edinburgh and lived in Scotland, traveled regularly to Greece and worked as a volunteer for NGOs that assist refugees and abused women.
