Russia is relocating a significant portion of its air defense systems to strategic targets around Moscow, Valdai, and the Crimean Bridge, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to him, the redeployment shows that the Kremlin is primarily seeking to protect its most important symbolic and military locations, while other parts of Russia are becoming more vulnerable to Ukrainian drone attacks.
In his daily video address on Wednesday evening, Zelenskyy said that Russia has concentrated “hundreds of launchers” for air defense missiles in the Moscow region. In addition, “nearly 90 launchers” have reportedly been moved from other regions to Valdai, a location about 500 kilometers northwest of Moscow where President Vladimir Putin has a residence. In addition, the Crimean Bridge is reportedly being given extra security, as it serves as a crucial supply route between the Russian mainland and the occupied Crimean Peninsula.
The Ukrainian president is thus painting a picture of a Russia that must deploy ever-increasing resources to secure key locations, while Ukrainian drones strike deeper into the Russian hinterland. In recent months, Kyiv has stepped up its airstrikes against Russian military installations and energy infrastructure, resulting in fuel shortages and disruptions to supplies.
Zelenskyy stated that Russia’s problems stem primarily from Putin’s refusal to end the war and engage in talks about a genuine peace. He also said that following the recent G7 summit, Ukraine has received additional support from Western partners, including U.S. President Donald Trump, who unexpectedly called Zelenskyy “courageous” on Wednesday.
According to Zelenskyy, further support could help Ukraine increase pressure on Russia and create conditions that would ultimately force Moscow to negotiate.
