We talk to our cats every day, without even thinking about it. When we open the windows, when we come home, when it walks around us with that look of theirs...: these mild, innocuous phrases subtly and persistently weave themselves into the relationship. Today, scientific research is putting some order into our certainties.
Scientists prove that our voice is heard, recognized and associated.
A cat lives immersed in its habits. The human voice, when it remains constant, becomes an integral part of its routine, like a stable element. According to a study published in the journal Animal Cognition by researchers Atsuko Saito and Kazutaka Shinozuka, cats recognize the voice of the person they live with and distinguish it clearly from that of strangers, even when they can't see them. This attentive response to familiar voices indicates a precise cognitive link between the sound and the individual.
At home, this recognition ability translates into a sense of calm. The cat moves more confidently, handles new situations with greater ease, and gets through the day's hectic moments with less tension. When vocal responses remain consistent, they build an emotional continuity that makes the environment easier to decipher. Confidence grows effortlessly, through gentle repetition.
How cats interpret our voices
Cats listen with their whole body. Their voice is inextricably linked to the posture, movements and energy we bring into the room. More recent research published in the journal Animals analyzed how cats react to different human signals. According to the results, cats approach more calmly when vocal communication is accompanied by consistent visual cues, such as slow movements and a poised presence. Voice alone is less effective in encouraging relaxed interaction than the combination of voice and body.
The tone of our voice conveys our emotional state. The rhythm of our breathing, the way we move and the space we occupy are all part of the same message. The cat assembles all these elements in a matter of moments. Coherent communication creates a stable atmosphere that he recognizes as safe.
When we talk to our cat
Talking to a cat also has an immediate effect on us. Words slow down our thoughts. Its silent presence anchors us in the present. Our caresses follow a rhythm that reduces tension. The body responds even before the mind.
And the cat soothes us in return. The purring, gentle movements and spontaneous closeness build a shared equilibrium. The house becomes a more livable space, even on bad days. A few phrases are all it takes, always the same, always gentle.
