According to two US officials and two other sources, the White House is close to an agreement to end the war with Iran, reports Axios.
An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman stated to CNBC that they are evaluating Washington's 14-point peace proposal. Axios reports that as a result, the U.S. expects a response from Iran on several key points within 48 hours. The US memo would formulate solutions around difficult points of contention such as Iran enriching uranium, lifting US sanctions, opening the Strait of Hormuz, limiting Iran's nuclear program and releasing billions in frozen Iranian assets. These are matters on which the United States and Iran have been diametrically opposed for the time being.
Pakistan plays a central role as a neutral mediator between the US and Iran, mainly through indirect diplomacy and the "Islamabad Agreement," the fragile and temporary cease-fire between the US and Iran mediated by Pakistan in April 2026.
At this point, Iran has not agreed to the U.S. draft proposal, which is one page long, but sources report that the sides have never been as close to an agreement since the war began. A Pakistani source involved in the peace negotiations confirmed Axios' report to the Reuters news agency. "We will conclude this very soon. We are almost there," the source said. An agreement on the 14 points would end the war and mark the start of a 30-day negotiation period on more details and could mark a definitive end to the conflict.
