In his first major interview as British prime minister, Andy Burnham says he will speak up to Donald Trump if it's in Britain’s interest. At the same time, he doesn't want unnecessary confrontation, but he does want to be clear about what he sees as the United Kingdom’s national priority.
According to Burnham, his first contact with the U.S. president was “very warm,” but he refuses to say whether he truly trusts Trump. “The world is constantly changing,” he said, “and you have to assess things as they develop.” He made these remarks in an extensive interview with the BBC.
Burnham is also keeping his cards close to his chest on defense. He does not yet want to commit to a date by which the British government will spend 3 percent of GDP on defense. He does, however, acknowledge that the planned investments must be fully funded and that this is one of his government’s first major priorities. When asked whether he rules out an early general election, Burnham is firm. He dismisses the idea of an election before 2029. In his view, the country is not ready for new elections, and his focus is on “getting the United Kingdom back on track.” Burnham also indicated that he is concerned about the way Trump has handled the conflict with Iran. He says he will not shy away from taking a different course if he believes it is better for the country.
Andy Burnham succeeded Keir Starmer, who stepped down after a brief and turbulent time in office. Starmer had previously served as prime minister for the Labour Party but made way for Burnham following an internal power shift within the party.
