Historic agreement in the USA: 1,500 beagles, destined to serve as guinea pigs in a Wisconsin research center, have been released after weeks of protests and tension. Now begins the long road to adoption.

The lives of almost 1,500 beagles destined for the cruelty of scientific experimentation are about to be turned upside down. After years of protests and weeks of high tension, Big Dog Ranch Rescue and Center for a Humane Economy have reached an agreement with Ridglan Farms to buy back the majority of the dogs on the site.

The agreement, the financial details of which remain confidential, concerns around three-quarters of the 2,000 animals housed at the breeding and research center in Wisconsin. The fate of the remaining dogs is still uncertain, while the transfer of the first groups is already underway.

From protests to confrontations: an issue that has inflamed debate

This turning point comes after weeks of intense media coverage, supported in particular by actor Ricky Gervais, who rallied for the release of the laboratory dogs. In mid-April, almost 1,000 activists attempted to enter the compound near Blue Mounds, provoking clashes with the police. The police response was particularly heavy-handed, using tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. A total of 29 arrests were made and several criminal charges were made. At the same time, a federal complaint was lodged against the authorities, accusing them of excessive use of force. Back in March, a group of activists had already managed to take 30 dogs away during a night raid, further fuelling the controversy.

Care, rehabilitation and a new life to tame

For the beagles, a delicate phase now begins. Brought to centers between Florida and Alabama, the animals will undergo veterinary examinations, be vaccinated and chipped. The most complex challenge, however, is behavioral. Many of them have never experienced a real domestic environment. They'll have to learn to walk on a leash, cohabit with humans and adapt to a totally new daily routine. This will be a gradual process, supervised by specialists, before their arrival in adoptive families.

Between accusations and defense: a case still open

Ridglan Farms has always rejected accusations of mistreatment, although an investigation revealed ophthalmological procedures that did not comply with veterinary standards. In 2025, the company had already agreed to relinquish its state license to avoid criminal prosecution. However, the organizations involved stress one essential point: the operation was carried out in a legal and structured manner, with the aim of ensuring the best possible future for the animals.

A symbolic victory for animal welfare

For the campaigners, this is a victory they have been waiting for for over ten years. Although they weren't directly involved in negotiating the agreement, they helped to publicize the situation, turning a local issue into a truly national one. Now the focus is on what really matters: transforming 1,500 lives scarred by research into stories of adoption and rebirth. A complex but meaningful step.
