A rape case has sparked outrage in France. A 16-year-old boy born in Morocco, who is alleged to be a drug dealer, is accused of attacking and raping an 80-year-old woman.
In Rennes, a minor has been charged with the rape of an 80-year-old woman following an attack in early July in the French city. The suspect, who according to the prosecutor’s office was likely born in Morocco in 2009, denies the allegations. The woman filed a police report a few days after the attack. Thanks to surveillance footage and DNA analysis, police were able to identify the young man, according to Rennes prosecutor Frédéric Teillet. He was arrested on Tuesday and has since been charged with the rape of a vulnerable person and theft.
Drug dealer
According to the prosecutor’s office, the young man was found in possession of cocaine packaged for resale. He is believed to have arrived in France a few months ago and to have been selling drugs in downtown Rennes. During a search of his home, police also found a piece of jewelry that the woman had lost during the attack. The severity of the charges was heightened by the victim’s vulnerability and the suspect’s young age. The Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that he has been taken into provisional custody and that a separate investigation into drug possession is also underway. His criminal record contains no prior convictions, although he was reportedly arrested earlier this year for a drug-related offense.
The case is part of a series of serious crimes that have received significant attention in France, especially when minors are involved. The investigation into the horrific crimes is continuing in Rennes, while the judge is considering the prosecution of the teenager.
