Heavy accident on the A20 freeway Messina-Palermo: a huge chain collision involved some 80 vehicles on Tuesday morning, just before 9 a.m., in the Villafranca tunnel, on the section between Rometta and Milazzo towards Messina. Not only cars, but also trucks were involved in the accident. Following the mega-chain collision, the fire department, police and several ambulances rushed out to assist drivers and passengers and to secure fuel tanks. Fortunately, as far as is known, there were no serious injuries.
The course of the accident
But what caused the massive accident? Initial reconstructions show that the road surface had become very slippery due to a diesel leak from a truck, which prevented vehicles from braking in time.
The chain collision brought traffic on the highway to a complete stop to allow for the evacuation of those involved in the tunnel. The A20 freeway in the direction of Palermo is currently closed on the section before the Rometta Marea exit, where drivers are obliged to leave the road.
