Man arrested with 44 bottles of exclusive wine from an evacuated building near Bordeaux.
In Eysines, France, near Bordeaux, a man was arrested on suspicion of stealing 44 bottles of exclusive wine from a home that had been evacuated due to wildfires in the region. Police found the bottles in his car on Saturday evening while he was parked in front of the property in question. The home was empty because the residents had been evacuated as the fires in Gironde spread rapidly. Eysines, a town on the outskirts of Bordeaux, was largely evacuated as part of the massive evacuations triggered by the fires in southwestern France. According to French media, hundreds of thousands of people in the region have already been temporarily displaced from their homes.
Looting during wildfires
The man was stopped by a police patrol that was helping to secure abandoned homes in the evacuated zones. In his car, officers found 44 bottles of grands crus, which, according to French sources, represent a significant financial loss. The suspect, who was already known to police and judicial authorities, was arrested on the spot and taken into custody. French authorities have implemented additional security measures in and around Bordeaux to prevent looting in abandoned homes. In addition to police, military personnel were also deployed to guard the evacuated neighborhoods. According to local media, the arrest in Eysines demonstrates that the turmoil surrounding the wildfires not only affects residents but also fuels opportunistic thefts.
The wildfires in Gironde have already destroyed tens of thousands of hectares and placed enormous strain on emergency services. While firefighters and evacuation crews remain active day and night, abandoned homes must also be secured. The incident in Eysines illustrates how quickly the chaos of a natural disaster can lead to crime.
