On the A89 highway, near Cervières in the Loire department of France, a couple on their way to their holiday destination got into an argument on Saturday, July 11.
After pulling over into the median, the man and woman got out of the car to yell at each other. The driver then drove off, leaving his partner behind on the side of the road.
Passing motorists who witnessed the scene alerted emergency services and reported that there were pedestrians on the highway. By the time motorcycle officers from the French gendarmerie arrived on the scene, the man had already left. The woman, however, was standing alone on the emergency shoulder. She was eventually brought to safety by another female driver who had stopped.
The incident could have ended tragically, as the presence of pedestrians on a highway is extremely dangerous, especially during a busy weekend like the one on July 11. Highway authorities regularly point out that the risk of a fatal accident is particularly high during such times.
