The Iranian regime is unwavering in sentencing Narges Mohammadi (on hunger strike since early February) to more than seven years' imprisonment, while Tehéran is cracking down on all dissent after nationwide protests and the deaths of thousands of people at the hands of the security forces.
Narges Mohammadi was sentenced to a year and a half's imprisonment for a hit-and-run offence. Mostafa Nili, confirmed the sentence on X, saying it had been issued by a revolutionary court in the city of Mashhad. These are courts, explains CNN, which generally issue verdicts with little or no opportunity for the accused to challenge the charges against them.
In addition, Narges will have to serve a further two years of internal exile in the town of Khosf, some 740 kilometers southeast of Tehran.
On February 8, the Foundation dedicated to her reported that Mohammadi had begun a new hunger strike to denounce what she considers to be illegal detention and the harsh conditions under which she is forced to live in prison. She is deprived of her fundamental rights: she cannot make telephone calls, meet her lawyers or receive visits.
"We deeply fear for her life," said her son Ali Rahmani from Paris, who together with his sister runs the foundation bearing his mother's name.
Narges Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for more than twenty years of defending human rights, particularly women's rights, in Iran. In 2022, she openly supported the protests that broke out after the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, who had been arrested for allegedly wearing a headscarf inappropriately.
As part of her struggle for human rights, she fought for freedom of expression and freedom of the press.
Her twin children, Kiana and Ali Rahmani, then aged 17, presented her with the prize in Oslo, reading a message smuggled out of Evin prison. "The Iranian people, with perseverance, will overcome repression and authoritarianism. Have no doubt: it will happen."
