Camels in Saudi Arabia to be provided with digital passports

Camels with passports? Yes, that's right: Mansour Almushaiti, Deputy Minister of Environment, Water Resources and Agriculture, has in fact launched the Camel Passport, aimed at regulating trade in these iconic desert animals.

The project is designed in line with the Saudi Vision 2030 and, according to the Saudi ministry's website, aims to regulate the sector, improve the efficiency of services and increase credibility in both the local and international markets. Specifically, the tool will act as an official and accredited identification document, linking each animal to verified health and regulatory data.

The system is designed to identify animals

In fact, the system is designed to document information about camels, their ownership and breeds.

This step is designed to improve service delivery, increase transaction reliability and strengthen veterinary and regulatory responses.

The passport contains the camel's microchip number, passport number, name, date of birth, breed, sex, color, place of birth and the authority that issued the passport, with photos of the animal from both the right and left sides. Just like a real passport.

The identity document also includes a detailed vaccination record, clearly documenting veterinary vaccinations, which helps to create a reliable health record for each camel and to support infectious disease monitoring efforts and enable rapid response.

The ministry added that the camel passport will help regulate the market by formalizing sales, logistics and legal documentation. This is expected to protect owners' rights, facilitate proof of ownership and promote greater transparency and trust throughout the industry.
