A 5-year-old boy has died after choking on a bite of food while having dinner with his parents at home in Sestu, Italy, in the city of Cagliari. The tragedy occurred on Sunday evening, February 22, during what should have been an ordinary, quiet family meal.
Things went wrong at around 8:30 p.m., when the child suddenly developed obvious respiratory problems: a piece of sausage had closed his airways. The parents, who were accompanied by emergency responders by phone, tried desperately to clear his throat, but they were unsuccessful. An emergency medical service ambulance quickly arrived at the scene.
The emergency workers who intervened in the home managed to clear the boy's airway within a short time, but he was already unconscious and in cardiac arrest. Doctors spent more than 40 minutes trying to resuscitate him, but all attempts were in vain. The little boy was pronounced dead at the scene, under the helpless eyes of his parents.
