Veysel Ü had an appointment with brothers Ali (57) and Hüseyin (62) Torunlar at a branch of McDonald's in Zwolle in March 2022. The fast food restaurant was packed at the time as it was lunchtime. However, the conversation between the three men suddenly escalated. Ü pulled out a revolver and fired as many as eleven shots at the brothers. In the process, both men were killed.

At the time of the events, there were many parents with children in the restaurant. Consequently, panic broke out. The then 32-year-old perpetrator fled, but turned himself in at the police station in Deventer that same evening.

On December 18, 2023, the Overijssel District Court sentenced him to 30 years in prison for double premeditated murder and also ordered him to pay damages totaling over 200,000 euros to the surviving family members.

Ü was thus initially given 30 years in prison, but that sentence was now reduced to 26 and a half years in prison on appeal at the Arnhem-Leeuwarden Court of Appeal.

The court's motivation for this lighter sentence was due to the fact that Ü suffered a disorder during his prison sentence. Indeed, research shows that he suffers from the stress of imprisonment. Moreover, he has had to wait too long for his trial. So now, after the district court, the court also comes to a murder conviction.

RTV Oost reports that Ü reacted to the verdict by "cursing and ranting", after which he was taken away to prison.
