The Giro d'Italia 2026 opened with an image that goes beyond sport: the Visma || Lease a Biketeam decided to race with red varnish on their nails, transforming an aesthetic detail into a strong and explicit social message.
The initiative also involves the team's leader, Dane Jonas Vingegaard, one of the race's most eagerly-awaited riders and a strong favorite for overall victory. The gesture is part of a campaign to raise awareness of the living conditions of children in Denmark, a theme that the team has chosen to bring to the international stage by taking advantage of the media resonance of the Giro.
Vingegaard's message
Vingegaard himself presented the initiative, clarifying the meaning of his choice in a video posted on the team's social media networks. The Dane stressed that this was a complex social issue, often difficult to tackle:
"It's for a good cause, for the living conditions of children in Denmark. One child in six is psychologically or physically abused by his or her parents, and we want to combat this: every child must be able to enjoy a healthy environment at home. It's a very important cause."
A team already committed to social issues
Visma || Lease a Bike is no stranger to social initiatives. In recent years, the team has already taken advantage of major competitions to run various awareness-raising campaigns. Among the best known is Paris-Roubaix 2023, where riders wore special helmets decorated with a brain to promote safety and the importance of wearing helmets in competition. For this edition of the Giro, the team has once again chosen to combine sport with a social message, using the global visibility of the event to highlight a particularly sensitive issue.
Sport as a sounding board
The issue of violence against minors is not unique to Denmark. It's a universal problem, requiring educational, health and social tools capable of spotting distress before it turns into trauma. The action taken by Vingegaard and the Visma team raises a broader question: are we really capable of seeing what goes on behind the doors of homes? And how often do we, as a society, confuse silence with normality? From this point of view, the red varnish is less an aesthetic symbol than a wake-up call: an element that breaks the surface of the sports narrative and forces us to face up to a problem that might otherwise remain invisible.
