Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, former prince of the United Kingdom, was put in handcuffs on his birthday. The news, which has since gone around the world, was brought out by the BBC, which stressed that the brother of King Charles, who turns 66 today, vigorously rejects all accusations, while authorities wanted to keep his name out of consideration for the time being.
In a statement, Thames Valley police said, "Today we arrested a man in his sixties from Norfolk on suspicion of misconduct in public office and are searching multiple addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk. The man is currently in police custody."
What does Prince Andrew have to do with the Epstein Files?
According to the BBC, several police cars were seen at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk in the early morning hours. News of the arrest followed after authorities announced they were investigating a complaint about the former prince's alleged sharing of confidential material with Jeffrey Epstein, the billionaire and businessman convicted of sexual abuse and human trafficking with minors.
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor could well be the first to be brought down following the publication of the Epstein Files, a collection of millions of documents, emails and testimonies (in which numerous politicians, businessmen and people from the entertainment world appear) accumulated over two decades of investigations into the criminal financier's activities.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had announced it in recent days: "In the United Kingdom, no one is above the law. One of the fundamental principles of our system is that everyone is equal before the law and no one is above it. It is really crucial that this principle is applied consistently."
