A fire suddenly broke out Wednesday morning at the Giardini della Biennale in Venice. The fire struck Serbia's pavilion. The flames, which flared up around 9:55 a.m., caused a thick column of black smoke visible from afar. This caused concern among residents, tourists and employees of the international art exhibition.
Thanks to the rapid intervention by the Venice Fire Department, the situation was under control in a short time. The fire started mainly on the roof of the pavilion and was fueled by the strong gusts of wind that have been sweeping across the lagoon since Tuesday evening. Due to the wind, firefighters had to work in several stages, with repeated interventions to completely extinguish the blaze and secure the smoldering material.
Causes and initial findings
At the time of the fire, renovation work was underway in the building. An initial hypothesis is that the fire may have been caused by a technical defect or malfunction. Further investigations should determine the exact cause. Fortunately, no one was injured and the damage appears to be limited to the exterior of the roof, with no impact on the interior, exhibits or surrounding buildings.
Many eyewitnesses reported a column of smoke rising over Venice, making the severity of the situation clear from a great distance. Images of the smoke and extinguishing efforts quickly spread through social media, attracting the attention of residents and art lovers, who were concerned for the safety of the artworks and visitors.
Fortunately, despite the unfavorable weather conditions, firefighters managed to contain the fire and prevent it from getting worse. Thanks to the coordinated and quick action, it was possible to prevent the fire from spreading to other buildings in the Giardini. Thus, both the works of art and the exhibition rooms were spared and the safety of all the staff present was ensured.
