American journalists oppose use of AI

American news company McClatchy is using artificial intelligence to rewrite articles by their journalists. Journalists refuse to put their names above the edited articles.

McClatchy publishes newspapers including The Miami Herald and The Sacramento Bee. The company recently began using a program that uses artificial intelligence to shorten and edit journalists' articles for specific audiences.

"I am one of the journalists in the McClatchy group who do not put their name under AI-generated articles," Julie K. Brown, a journalist for The Miami Herald, posted on X. Brown is known for her journalistic work that led to the arrest of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, among others.

"I write about sensitive topics that should in no way be rewritten or altered by artificial intelligence. Whether it is sexual abuse or immigrants incarcerated in Alligator Alcatraz, our journalists do everything they can to make sure their articles are accurate, objective and convey indispensable human aspects, and that is something AI simply cannot do," she wrote.

McClatchy publishes 30 newspapers in 14 U.S. states.
