AI also costs (many) jobs in tech sector itself

The tech sector is losing jobs at an alarming rate this year. According to the website Layoffs.fyi, during the first four months of 2026, over 103,500 jobs at 131 tech companies have already disappeared: that's almost as many as in all of 2025, when the total came to over 124,000 jobs at 272 companies.

The big names are impressive: Amazon cut 16,000 jobs at the end of January, Oracle 30,000 at the end of March and Dell 11,000 in March. Meta did it in three waves: 1,500 in January, 700 in March and 8,000 in April. Ericsson (1,600) and PayPal (4,760) also let large groups of workers go.

Remarkably, the blow is mostly in the U.S., and particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area, the heart of the tech world that is now bearing the brunt of the AI revolution initiated by the sector itself.
