Countdown to Valentine's Day, but a first for Galentine's Day: a day celebrating female friendship

February 13 is not only the eve of Valentine's Day: it's the day when female friendship takes center stage. Many of you may not know it, but the so-called 'Galentine's Day' celebrates the most sincere bonds that endure any changes of city, stage of life, work or love life.
It's not anti-Valentine's Day, nor a celebration for singles, but an opportunity to acknowledge that deep affection that has accompanied us for (almost) all our lives. It's that endless voice message, the impromptu dinner or the trip planned together: simple gestures that confirm how valuable and stable a friendship is.
The idea originated in 2010 in an episode of the TV series Parks and Recreation, when Leslie Knope, played by Amy Poehler, concocts a breakfast among girlfriends to celebrate the 'extraordinary women' in her life. The scene went viral and turned that fictional day into a real tradition, which today has spread throughout the United States and, gradually, across Europe.
Ideas for celebrating Galentine's Day
There's no set pattern for celebrating Galentine's Day, it's just important that it suits the friend group. A homey brunch with a beautifully set table and small, personalized gifts is always a success. Or a movie night with movies about women's friendship, popcorn and after-dinner chat can turn into an unforgettable moment.
Other ideas include a dinner away from home, away from the hustle and bustle around Valentine's Day, or shared experiences such as ceramics courses, yoga classes or tastings: activities that strengthen team spirit and make the day concrete and fun. Finally, small symbolic gestures such as heartfelt letters or handmade gifts remind girlfriends how important they are, without the need for large expenditures.
The importance of connection
The success of Galentine's Day points to a deeper need: to give space to women's friendship as a place of mutual support, growth and connection. While many celebrations revolve around romance, this day spotlights authentic bonds that focus on gratitude, recognition and fun.
At a time when relationships are often judged by your relationship status, Galentine's Day reminds us that friendship is a pillar of social life, a constant that endures change and deserves its own special day. Celebrating girlfriends means spending time and attention with each other and laughing together, turning everyday gestures into memorable moments.
