15-Year-Old boy sentenced to 18 years in prison for murder of school supervisor in France

A 15-year-old boy has been sentenced in France to 18 years in prison for the murder of a school supervisor in Haute-Marne. The case, which shocked the entire country last year, was heard behind closed doors by the Chaumont Juvenile Court.

No reduction in sentence

The court thus upheld the prosecution’s recommendation. Because he was a minor, the teenager faced a maximum sentence of twenty years in prison. However, the court ruled that at the time of the crime, his criminal responsibility was diminished because the boy was suffering from a delusion of persecution. At the same time, the judge decided not to apply a reduced sentence, despite that finding. According to the court, the “extreme gravity of the offenses” carried greater weight, as did the fact that the defendant showed no“empathy, remorse, or regret.” In addition to the prison sentence, he was also ordered to undergo ten years of social-legal supervision, including mandatory treatment.

The murder took place on June 10, 2025, in Nogent, a quiet town in Haute-Marne. The victim, 31-year-old Mélanie, worked as a teaching assistant at the Françoise-Dolto middle school. She was stabbed to death in front of the school during an unannounced bag search by the gendarmerie intended to detect knives and other weapons.

The case caused a major stir in France. According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the teenager had hatched his plan a few days earlier, following a conflict with another supervisor. During his interrogation, he stated that he had not specifically targeted Mélanie, but that he wanted to attack “any” supervisor. In the courtroom, the verdict was met with applause from those present. About fifty relatives and supporters had come to Chaumont to support the victim’s family. The boy’s parents were also present. The victim is survived by a son. For her family, the trial ends with a harsh sentence, but without answers to all the questions about what exactly drove the teenager to commit such an act.
